What to Do in North Vancouver on the Labour Day Long Weekend

Labour Day weekend on the North Shore is the last round of the summer-long version of this place: the attractions running late hours, the night market still on its weekly schedule, and the mountain light starting to go golden at seven instead of nine. There is no big street festival on it this year — the old September Shipyards festival was retired in favor of a June block party — so the weekend belongs to the standing attractions, and they are having a good final week.

Friday night starts it early

The long weekend effectively begins Thursday evening for anyone paying attention to traffic, but the first real event is Friday: the Shipyards Friday Night Market at Shipbuilders' Square runs Fridays through September 11, so September 4 is in play, with the Made in the 604 maker market filling the Pipe Shop venue the same night. The market is free to wander, running from 3pm with gates closing at 10, so treat early evening as the natural window to arrive.

If you are local, my honest advice is do Friday properly: market, then dinner on Lonsdale while the tourist pace is still someone else's problem.

The bridge, with a strategy

Capilano Suspension Bridge Park keeps its long summer hours through September 7 — eight thirty in the morning until eight at night — which means all three holiday days run late enough that you can do something else first. That is the whole trick to enjoying it on a long weekend. Go after five and two things happen: the tour buses thin out, and the twilight rate cuts admission by a quarter. The cliffwalk and the treetops experience are both better in low light anyway. Children five and under are free.

Grouse Mountain runs daily access until nine through the same stretch, and the Skyride does its best work in the last hour of daylight. If someone in your house has been saying since May that they meant to get up there, this is the weekend the excuse list runs out.

Lonsdale, at its own speed

Lonsdale Quay Market is open every day of the weekend as usual, market floor from nine, food hall later, and it is the correct rainy-morning fallback if the forecast turns. The Polygon Gallery's summer photography show runs through late October, so the weekend is well inside its window if you have been meaning to see it, though the gallery is closed Mondays, so Labour Day itself is the one day that will not work.

What the Shipyards will not have this year is a big festival — no stage, no road closures, none of it. If you were here for a September festival some previous year, that event has changed shape; plan around markets and mountains rather than expecting programming.

Getting here without the bridge

TransLink had not published its Labour Day service bulletin when I checked, so assume Sunday-level frequency on the SeaBus and holiday schedules everywhere else until they say otherwise. The SeaBus itself is the single best way in: no bridge, a ten-minute crossing, and the skyline doing its thing behind you the entire ride.

Cycling over either bridge is for people who enjoy that sort of thing; everyone else should let the bus carry them up Lonsdale, because that hill forgives nobody on the second day of a long weekend.

Eating around it

Lower Lonsdale handles long weekends the way it handles everything: densely. The restaurants and breweries along the first few blocks of Lonsdale fill from six thirty onward on holiday weekends, and the quay's food hall absorbs the spillover until late. Coffee before a Grouse departure is not optional with children; the places this directory's coffee guide covers open early and pour fast, but Saturday at nine is a different sport from Tuesday at nine. Book one proper dinner — Sunday or Monday, not Saturday — and let the other meals stay improvised.

The Monday fine print

Both North Vancouver city halls observe the stat holiday, community centre hours shrink, and the fall schedule changes arrive the following week, so this is genuinely the last weekend of the summer operating pattern across the board. Capilano drops to shorter hours starting September 8.
